At the beginning of the workshop, a brief lecture on climate change and polar melting will be provided. Additionally, Martin Liira will share his experiences from his life in the Svalbard, and his captivating stories and photos will give participants an insight into the environment of that region.Participants will create a short video clip during the workshop, capturing the inspiration and activities.Schedule:

Workshop by Marta Djourina ‘Floating Photo Lab’
25.7.2024, at 15–19 o`clock

Ice Age CentreSaadjärve 20, 60543 Äksi

Marta Djourina’s Workshop continues her artistic research from the monumental public art installation ‘Ashes of Ice’ at the facade of the Ice Age Centre. Key aspects of her photographic methods are upcycling of unused materials and alternative photographic development processes avoiding the standard chemicals.

During the workshop the participants will have the chance to archive ephemeral moments like the light breaking through the surface of water. These lumen prints capture a certain aesthetic of the location and conserve its existence. The aesthetic results oscillate between experimental and compositional happenings on the photosensitive paper, inviting the participants to engage with the individuality of each space and its unique natural environment at Tartu.

Duration: 3 h
Participants (amount): max. 15
Age: no restriction

Basics on collecting and working with herbs as natural healing resources in a sustainable way through practice.

Herbs have been engaged in my life since childhood – through this practical workshop I would like to share my knowledge and experience on finding, collecting, preserving and using herbs in a sustainable way and on the question how we could use them as medicine as well for food. We put the focus on how we could use the herbs in a way that it would be sustainable for nature – how picking herbs would not damage the natural balance too much; how to re-cycle materials for preserving the herbs etc.

The workshop takes place during waxing moon period – the time when the healing potential of plants is high. We start the workshop by walks from Jääaja Keskus (Ice Age Centre), along the shores of Saadjärv lake, looking, observing and collecting herbs. During small breaks we talk about on how to find and collect the plants so that it is not exhausting to nature; and we discuss the plants we have collected – their healing benefits and folklore/beliefs around them.

During a longer break we make a simple meal outside by using some of the collected plants – discussing the various possibilities for combining a nutritious meal. Afterwards we talk more specifically about how to preserve the herbs and on how to use dried, preserved herbs; which combinations of herbs are effective, about contraindications etc. Participants will receive digital material on herbs we have been collecting – covering the specifics of healing qualities and the range of use.

Duration: 4 h
Participants (amount): max. 15
Age restriction: no age restriction. The workshop is recommended from age 15, but if someone under age 15 has a keen interest in herbs they are more than welcome.
