A tire tower rises to the Moon
A tire tower rises in the middle of the 3rd floor of the Ice Age Center. This tower reaches to the Moon. So many new tires are produced each year that, stacked on top of each other, this tower would reach out to the Moon.
It may come as a surprise to many that the tower made of car tires produced every year in the world is higher than the distance between the Earth and the Moon. Or that one car consists of about 28,000 parts that are transported all over the world, or that during the “lifetime” of one machine it consumes up to 36 car tires, 8 brake discs, 3-4 batteries.
“We are not reinventing the wheel with our exhibitions, these are topics that have been talked about for a long time,” said Kadri Valner, the curator of the exhibitions, CEO of the Ice Age Center. “We try to ‘translate’ many everyday activities into the language of numbers, in the hope that these facts will be remembered and influence us.”
At the same time, it is not limited to just tracking numbers, added Valner. “We are also looking at the future of the automotive industry, with the help of both automotive journalists and Lähte high school students, who drew their vision of future transportation.”
At the exhibitions, people’s kitchens and wardrobes are also displayed, making the visitor realize that 330 kg of food thrown away per person per year or 25 kg of clothes purchased per year is a very large amount, which can certainly be reduced by acting sensibly. In order not only to show, you will also get some tips from the exhibition.
In order to be truly environmentally friendly, we recommend people coming from Tartu to use free public transport. The footprint of bus traffic is smaller than that of car passengers.
