New exhibition – Estonian Polar Club

Polaarklubi näitus Jääaja Keskuses

Exhibition- 40 Years of the Estonian Polar Club

This exhibition presents the 40-year history of the Estonian Polar Club and highlights the contribution of Estonian scientists and researchers to polar exploration. The club was founded on December 1, 1984, at the Estonian Maritime Museum, with the aim of bringing together participants of polar expeditions and introducing Arctic and Antarctic topics to a wider audience.

Over the years, the club’s members have represented a wide range of scientific fields, from meteorology and climatology to biology, geology and journalism. An important part of the club’s work has been the documentation and preservation of Estonia’s polar heritage, as well as international cooperation with polar organisations.

The exhibition offers an overview of the club’s history and activities through the decades, featuring photographs and stories from expeditions. It also looks to the future, as polar research continues to be highly relevant and inspiring for new generations of scientists.

Special highlights include a map of Antarctica, showing all polar stations where Estonian researchers have worked, and a map of Svalbard, one of the most frequently visited expedition areas. At the request of Tallinn Zoo, the exhibition has been enriched with photos of animals and birds encountered during expeditions.

Previously displayed at the Estonian Maritime Museum, the exhibition is now open for a limited time at the Ice Age Centre.

You are welcome to explore the exhibition on the third floor of the Ice Age Centre.

We thank the Estonian Polar Club and the Estonian Maritime Museum for the opportunity to present this exhibition.
